This report presents three successful models of programs designed specifically to keep young people in school.
Abstract
The first case study describes the K-SIX program in Fresno County, California, which aims to discover children at risk of academic failure before they begin to fail. Interdisciplinary teams of social workers, mental health specialists, and probation officers work within the schools to deliver specialized services tailored to the individual needs of each child referred to the program. The Sarasota, Florida, community-centered approach to getting high school dropouts back on track is described. The King Academy provides an alternative education for dropouts and students with problems that threaten to keep them out of school. The curriculum allows students to work at their own pace, with computer-aided instruction supervised by certified teachers. The third description focuses on how a national dropout prevention program, Cities In Schools, operates in Charlotte, North Carolina and describes the program's basic replication procedure.
