This report from Project 2020, an initiative of the International Cyber Security Protection Alliance (ICSPA), examines the future of cybercrime.
Abstract
This publication provides information to enable governments, businesses and citizens to prepare themselves for the challenges and opportunities of the coming decade. It comprises a range of activities, including common threat reporting, scenario exercises, policy guidance and capacity building. Highlights include: clouds will be used for distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks; there will be a more mature black market for virtual items; cyber gang wars; sophisticated reputation manipulation; and physical attacks will occur against data centers, internet exchanges, critical infrastructure, unmanned vehicles, robots, and bio-hacks. Incident responders will have to be more creative and flexible in responding to such activities; the distinction between legal and illegal activity will be increasingly blurred; conventional thinking of protected and absolute control of Intellectual Property (IP) may lead to conditional control as some governments may become dovish in responding to the increasingly prevalent (legal and illegal) access to IP; and as governments establish more privacy laws, the risk of incompatibility between countries increases, creating more roadblocks for responding to cybercrime.
