This article provides an overview of Project 54; a voice recognition technology placed in patrol vehicles to aid officers in being more efficient and safer during patrol operations.
Abstract
Developed as a collaborative research and development effort involving the University of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Department of Safety, an officer driving a Project 54 equipped car is able to fully utilize the in-car equipment by using voice commands, on screen touch commands, or the manual controls for the specific equipment. Project 54 software requires no learning phase and has a very high cognition rate. Project 54 works well due to categorized commands that have unique sounds. The key to success of Project 54 is ensuring that the system can work with interfaces built into the electronics of police equipment. The success of Project 54 lies in a commitment to simple, non-proprietary interfaces and compatibility with the widest possible range of equipment. The overall system is made up of five parts: computer, microphone, interface boxes, Project 54 software, and the equipment that is being controlled. Project 54 is seen as a tool that effectively extends officer capabilities.
