A LEAA DISCRETIONARY GRANT PROGRAM AIMED AT REPLICATING A COMMUNITY-BASED TREATMENT MODEL THAT PROVED EFFECTIVE IN DEALING WITH SERIOUS JUVENILE OFFENDERS IN DENVER, COLO., IS ANNOUNCED.
Abstract
THE GRANT PROGRAM, ENTITLED REPLICATION OF PROJECT NEW PRIDE--A SERVICE OFFENDER YOUTH TREATMENT PROGRAM, IS FUNDED UNDER THE OMNIBUS CRIME CONTROL AND SAFE STREETS ACTS AND THE JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION ACT. GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLY TO PRIVATE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND AGENCIES. PROJECT NEW PRIDE USED A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO TREATING ADJUDICATED DELINQUENTS WITH MULTIPLE SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT PROBLEMS AND LONG HISTORIES OF FAILURE IN TRADITIONAL TREATMENT. THE NEW PRIDE MODEL IS ONE OF NONRESIDENTIAL, COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES AIMED AT REDUCING RECIDIVISM, IMPROVING SOCIAL FUNCTIONING, AND INCREASING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, JOB SKILLS, AND EMPLOYABILITY. CRITICAL PROGRAM ELEMENTS INCLUDE DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT, REMEDIAL EDUCATION, SPECIAL EDUCATION FOR YOUTH WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES, CULTURAL AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION, JOB PREPARATION AND PLACEMENT, INTENSIVE SUPERVISION, VOLUNTEER SUPPORT, AND FOLLOWUPS. THE ANNOUNCEMENT PROVIDES POTENTIAL APPLICANTS FOR REPLICATION GRANTS WITH INFORMATION ON THE BACKGROUND, OBJECTIVES, TARGET POPULATION, WORKING ASSUMPTIONS, AND DESIRED RESULTS OF THE REPLICATION PROGRAM; ITS STRATEGY (DESIGN, PERFORMANCE STANDARDS, RANGE AND DURATION OF GRANTS, APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY AND CAPABILITY); GRANT APPLICATION CONTENT AND PROCEDURES; CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF PROJECTS; EVALUATION REQUIREMENTS; AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABILITY.
