This program resource manual supports efforts in Denver, Colorado, to devise coordinated antiviolence initiatives at the local level.
Abstract
The manual presents initial but continuing efforts to address drug and violent crimes in Denver. Program summaries, recommendations, and strategies contained in the manual focus on seven key areas: (1) law enforcement coordination and collaboration, training and education, operational effectiveness, and resources; (2) prosecution, courts, and corrections, including alternative or innovative facilities and programs, treatment options, and youth offenders; (3) education and training; (4) social services, public housing, and health services; (5) community involvement at the neighborhood level; (6) advocacy, intervention, and support for crime victims and witnesses; and (7) legislative actions, such as limiting the sale of firearms, reforming the juvenile justice system, and reforming the sentencing system. Additional recommendations concern parenting skills, family management, media involvement in crime prevention, and youth employment.
