REPORT ON A PROJECT DESIGNED TO GATHER INFORMATION ON EXISTING LATENT FINGERPRINT SYSTEMS AND DEVELOP CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF SINGLE FINGERPRINT SEARCH SYSTEMS.
Abstract
THE FIRST PART OF THIS REPORT PRESENTS A DESCRIPTION OF SELECTION METHODOLOGY AND ON-SITE REVIEWS OF SYSTEMS. PART TWO DESCRIBES THE NINE SYSTEMS THAT WERE VISITED BY THE RESEARCHERS. THE FOLLOWING FOUR SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS WERE SELECTED AS REPRESENTING THE BASIC OPTIONS: THE MIRACODE SEARCH AND RETRIEVAL EQUIPMENT EMPLOYING MICROFILM IMAGES AS THE DATA BASE, A MICROFILMMICROFICHE IMAGE FILE WITH THE CAPABILITY OF A COMPUTERIZED DATA BASE SEARCH, A VIDEOFILE SYSTEM EMPLOYING A VIDEOTAPE IMAGE AND DATA BASE FILE AND HAVING A COMPUTER SEARCH CAPABILITY, AND A MANUAL SYSTEM UTILIZING FINGERPRINT CARDS. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE THAT AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM IS WORTHWHILE BECAUSE OF THE TIME SAVED IN SEARCHES. THE MAJOR DRAWBACK IN CONVERTING A MANUAL SYSTEM TO AUTOMATION IS THE COST OF RECLASSIFYING ALL THE FINGERPRINT CARDS. THE APPENDIXES INCLUDE A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EACH OF THE SINGLE FINGERPRINT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS REPORTED IN THE SURVEY AND THE DESCRIPTION OF A PALM PRINT CODING SYSTEM USED BY THE SHREVEPORT (LA) POLICE DEPARTMENT.
