Projections developed by Great Britain's Home Office indicate that the average total prison population in England and Wales will increase from 51,000 in 1995 to 59,900 by the year 2004.
Abstract
The same projections indicate that the sentenced adult male population will increase from 32,000 in 1995 to 37,400 in 2004. The population of sentenced male young offenders will increase from 5,600 in 1995 to 7,500 in 2004. The detained population will increase from 11,400 in 1995 to 12,600 in 2004. These projections rest on the assumptions that receptions of sentenced males will continue past trends, that sentencing policy will be an average of 1994 and 1995 for both custody and community proportions and the distribution of custodial sentence lengths, and that the time served in custody for each nominal sentence length will remain at the level experienced in the last few years.
