This paper describes some of the strategies that communities have used, as part of the Federal Drug-Free Communities Support Program, to prevent juvenile substance abuse.
Abstract
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy directs the Drug-Free Communities Support Program in partnership with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The program provides grants of up to $100,000 to community coalitions that mobilize efforts to prevent youth alcohol, tobacco, illicit drug, and inhalant abuse. Community efforts include educational support, public relations/outreach campaigns, enforcement efforts, and coalition building. The following summaries highlight innovative strategies used by some coalitions to help their communities become drug-free: (1) Peers Are Staying Straight (PASS), Prattville, AL; (2) Vallejo Community Consortium, Vallejo, CA; (3) Adolescent Counseling Exchange (ACE), Denver, CO; (4) Troy Community Coalition (TCC), Troy, MI; (5) North Central Community Based Services (NCCBS), Chama, NM; (6) Lane County Prevention Coalition, Eugene, OR; and (7) TOGETHER! Youth Violence, Alcohol, Drug Prevention, Lacey, WA. Resources
