This article discusses ways to promote racial harmony in high school.
Abstract
Actions that will help foster healthy race relations in high school include: (1) emphasizing human sensitivity rather than cultural sensitivity and establishing clear guidelines for appropriate behavior and consequences for violating the rules; (2) encouraging students to generate constructive strategies to handle racism, rather than dwelling on destructive anger and guilt; (3) integrating African-American history into classes on American history; (4) examining the common myths about the different races; (5) holding class discussions on how racial and ethnic differences are used to divide and oppress people; (6) encouraging students to learn about the family tree of someone of another race; (7) teaching students to think critically about information they hear about different racial or ethnic groups; (8) encouraging students to generate strategies to cope with racially prejudiced or insensitive people; (9) appointing students to the student court or conflict resolution team; and (10) offering a variety of extracurricular activities. The article recommends ways to deal with students' racial conflicts and offers clues to identify students at risk of becoming juvenile racists. References
