Targeted to medical personnel, this training film explains how to collect physical evidence from rape victims and suspects using the Rape Evidence Kit supplied to hospitals by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
Abstract
After discussing points that the initial interview with a rape victim by hospital staff should cover, the film describes the Rape Evidence Kit and how it guides the physical exam. Goals of the SBI's Rape Evidence Kit program are outlined. The film discusses questioned versus known samples and urges medical personnel to use the instruction sheet as a checklist. It explains how to collect and label the following types of evidence required by the kit: pubic hair combings, known head and pubic hair, blood samples, saliva samples, and vaginal smears. The videotape also discusses documenting minor injuries such as bites and bruises. The Evidence Kit provides information on North Carolina's victim services and rape crisis centers. Procedures for completing the Request Examination form and sending the evidence to the SBI via a law enforcement officer are detailed. Also covered are procedures for victims who do not want to report the rape to the police and procedures for collecting evidence from a rape suspect.
