This paper outlines Federal guidelines for the proper disposal of prescription drugs.
Abstract
The guidelines advise disposers of prescription drugs not to flush them down the toilet or drain unless the label or accompanying patient information provides instructions to do so. In disposing of prescription drugs not labeled to be flushed, individuals may be able to use a community drug take-back program or other program, such as household hazardous waste collection events that collect drugs at a central location for proper disposal. In order to determine whether such programs are available, individuals should call local government's household trash and recycling service. If a drug take-back or collection program is not available, the guidelines advise that prescription drug be taken out of their original containers and mixed with an undesirable substance such as cat litter or used coffee grounds. The mixture should then be placed in a disposable container with a lid, such as an empty margarine tub or a sealable bag. Conceal or remover any personal information, including Rx number, on the empty containers by covering it with black permanent marker or duct tape, or by scratching it off. Place the sealed container with the mixture and the empty drug containers in the trash.
