This article suggests that an ideal correctional rehabilitation program should contain certain characteristics that teach skills to clients irrespective of program type.
Abstract
Successful rehabilitation programs have the following characteristics: provide specific guidelines for the use of positive reinforcement; draw from various sources; are heavily scripted; are based on evaluated results; contain structured activity required of the learner; require transfer of training; have a method of teacher monitoring; have a method of peer monitoring; contain outcome evaluation; contain techniques and a rationale for client selection; are repetitive and integrated; require active teacher participation; and are constructed for a specific purpose and a specific clientele. Examples of effective training programs in corrections are cited, and issues relevant to correctional rehabilitation are discussed. 12 references
