This chapter discusses some of the problems that will face environmental crime prosecutors into the next century, as well as the future implications of recent environmental studies of local, State, and Federal environmental crime prosecution.

Abstract

Some of the key factors that will affect the prosecution of environmental offenses include changes in the standards of admissibility of scientific evidence into the courtroom, an enhanced public awareness of issues related to environmental crime, the growing realization of the crime problem as an equity issue, and criminal displacement caused by tougher enforcement of environmental laws. The effectiveness of environmental crime prosecution may be enhanced by the widened availability of specialized training and prosecutors' greater willingness to experiment with new technologies and strategies. 8 notes and 48 references
