This codebook explains the variables, coding system, and research methodology used to gather and analyze statistical information on how prosecutors and the courts disposed of criminal cases involving adults arrested for felony crimes in Portland and Washington, D.C.
Abstract
The cases in the data files were initiated or filed in 1982. The sample includes 11,185 cases in Washington and 6,146 cases in Portland. The files contain information on all felony arrests, cases filed, and cases indicted. Sentencing information is also provided in the Portland file. Descriptions of each jurisdiction present the variable list, the data element dictionary, crime charge codes and recodes, and frequencies.
