Police employee militance probably will result in police strikes within 5 or 10 years in Australia. Police administrators most likely will resist union activities.
Abstract
The impacts of police unions, union objectives, police employee grievances, and the need for professionalization of the various Australian police forces are examined for the States of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania. Discussion also focuses on the development of police unions in Australia, police employee morale, police dispute settlement, and the future role of police unions. Suggestions for improving police employees' relations with management include introducing positively structured internal control mechanisms and more democratic decisionmaking within police agencies. Figures, chapter notes, and an index are supplied. Objectives statements of police unions and associations, a list of police wages, and a classified list of police employee grievances are appended.
