The Federal effort to protect metropolitan public transportation systems from terrorists involves actions by the Department of Justice and other agencies to enhance local agencies’ capability to detect and prevent a terrorist attack and to improve the emergency response and containment capabilities after an attack.
Abstract
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) leads the effort within the Department of Justice to identify technology needs and priorities, develop enhanced capabilities, and bring newly developed products to the commercial market. NIJ participates in the activities of (1) the G-7 plus Russia, which is composed of policymakers and experts with an international focus; (2) the Infrastructure Protection Task Force, which works to prevent terrorist acts against the infrastructures of the United States; and (3) the Technical Support Working Group, which focuses on developing technology to respond to all types of domestic terrorism. NIJ and the Department of Transportation surveyed select groups of people closely involved in issues of terrorist attacks on land transportation systems to aid in preparing its position paper on counterterrorism for submission to the G-7. NIJ’s response to identified counterterrorism needs includes the development of new technology and training for first responders and bomb disposal teams and the development of interactive training resources.
