This paper examines existing law and procedures in Malaysia to aid victims of certain crimes of passion, including rape.
Abstract
The reporting system for crimes is detailed as well as protections to ensure that the privacy of the reporting victim is not violated during investigation and trial. While the Malaysian legal system does not provide for the offender to compensate the victim, the government's police system has responded to the needs of rape victims by establishing Rape and Sexual Crime Investigations squads comprised of female officers. Rape crisis centers have been established to give psychological support to rape victims. The article discusses raising the age limit for statutory rape to 16 and points out the difficulty of enforcing such a law when Malaysian cultural and religious tenets define female maturity for marriage as the onset of puberty. 7 footnotes.
