Federal and State laws are described which relate to the protection of children from three types of exploitation: oppressive child labor, pornography and prostitution, and parental kidnapping.
Abstract
Child labor laws are outlined with respect to their origins; their provisions regarding ages of employment, hours of employment, prohibited or hazardous occupations; the penalties and remedies under child labor laws; and reforms of child labor laws to provide more job opportunities for youths. An overview of the problem of sexual exploitation of children accompanies descriptions of the Federal Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation Act, State child pornography laws, the obscenity issue, State child prostitution laws, and legal reforms to protect children in cases involving sexual exploitation. A discussion of parental kidnapping explains the provisions of the 1980 Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act, State custodial interference laws, the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction Act, the Missing Children Act, and tort remedies for the child victim. A total of 262 footnotes are provided.
