THE CONTENT OF COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE AS PROVIDED BY THE POLICE IN THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS, IS DISCUSSED, ALONG WITH THE NEED TO INCLUDE PSYCHOSOCIAL ASSISTANCE AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE.
Abstract
A SAMPLE OF POLICE OFFICERS IN THE HAGUE POLICE FORCE COMPLETED A QUESTIONNAIRE IN WHICH THEY WERE ASKED WHICH PART OF THEIR DUTIES THEY CONSIDERED MOST IMPORTANT, AND WHICH MOST DIFFICULT. THE MAJORITY CONSIDERED PSYCHOSOCIAL ASSISTANCE THE MOST IMPORTANT AND MOST DIFFICULT TASK. THIS RESPONSE WAS COMPARED TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME SPENT IN POLICE TRAINING COURSES ON PSYCHOSOCIALLY RELATED SUBJECTS, AND TO COMMUNITY OPINION ON THE POLICE FORCE'S MAIN TASK. A CHART INDICATED THAT NO SPECIAL COURSES WERE INCLUDED IN THE SCHEDULE OF BASIC POLICE TRAINING. MOST POLICE OFFICERS WERE ONLY PARTLY OR NOT AT ALL SATISFIED WITH THEIR TRAINING AND MANY FELT THE COURSES WERE UNRELATED TO THEIR FUTURE RESPONSIBILITIES. THE COMMUNITY FAVORED THE ABILITY OF THE POLCE TO BE OPEN TO THE CHANGING NORMS AND BEHAVIOR OF ITS POPULATION. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THERE IS A NEED TO IMPROVE THE AMOUNT AND QUALITY OF PSYCHOSOCIAL ASSISTANCE THROUGH MORE EMPHASIS ON THIS SUBJECT IN POLICE TRAINING.
