To increase public awareness of child abuse and neglect, this project reviewed existing public awareness programs nationwide and provided technical assistance to aid their operations.
Abstract
The project, sponsored by the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (NCAAN), was based in the belief that public education efforts are needed to change public attitudes toward abusing parents and to encourage abusing parents to seek help. In addition to reporting on existing public awareness programs and activities and providing assistance, the project surveyed and reported on 20 sites interested in developing public awareness programs and activities, developed prototype public service materials, and developed a guidance manual. Project staff recommend that NCANN thoroughly assess the experience of the 20 sites, extend the program as widely as possible beyond the original 20 sites, and use this initial effort as a base upon which to build and launch additional materials. In addition, the materials developed thus far and in the future should be used to inform abusing parents that help is available, consideration should be given to pretesting themes and to producing a short film dealing with child abuse and neglect for the general public, and the feasibility of promoting a network 'white paper' documentary special should be considered. Appended are information on six sites, a list of additional organizations visited, information on the 20 sites, organizations contacted by telephone, materials gathered, recommendations of sites, scripts/art work, sites' implementation plans, and NCCAN's dissemination plans.
