A high-level police official in Belfast, Northern Ireland, describes the support that Americans provide to the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), the organization's links with international terrorist groups and certain nations, and the organization's dependence on foreign support.

Abstract

The PIRA has survived because it has adapted quickly to changes in the environment and has been able to disguise its objectives behind the traditional symbols of Irish nationalism.< As a result, it receives extensive support from Irish-Americans, many of whom believe that their contributions are going for food and clothing for the unfortunate. The organization's arms purchases and the Marxist trends in some of its leadership are the reality, however. PIRA has links with both European terrorist organizations and those in the Middle East, particularly in the areas of training and arms supply. The most crucial aspect of the PIRA's international links is its almost total reliance on foreign support to sustain its terrorist efforts. Thirty-two reference notes are supplied.
