Annotation

Forensic psychiatry is one aspect in the management of a proportion of violent offenders in Australian prisons.

Abstract

Within the correctional setting, a psychiatrist may be required to treat offenders who do not suffer from psychiatric illnesses. The management of violent offenders requires a containment of the violence, the provision of information to the court on a range of factors regarding the offender, and the continuing management of the offender after sentencing. Offenses committed by violent offenders who are treated by forensic psychiatrists generally fall into four categories: assaults in general, domestic assault, violence by drug offenders, and sexual assaults. To manage these offenders most effectively, the psychiatrist must cooperate with various legal and correctional professionals. 12 references
