Abstract
THE FIRST SEVEN CHAPTERS, CONFINED TO CALIFORNIA LAW, ARE DEVOTED TO A DISCUSSION OF THE LAW AND PROCEDURE WHICH HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE AREAS OF CRIMINAL INSANITY, DIMINISHED CAPACITY, CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY, JUDICIAL COMMITMENT OF THE MENTALLY ILL, MENTALLY DISORDERED SEX OFFENDERS, AND NARCOTICS ADDICTION. THE LAST FIVE CHAPTERS OF THIS MANUAL ARE DESIGNED TO AID THE CRIMINAL LAWYER IN TRIAL TECHNIQUE AND APPROACH. TOPICS CONSIDERED INCLUDE VOIR DIRE, DIRECT EXAMINATION OF THE PSYCHIATRIST, AND CROSS-EXAMINATION. EXCERPTS FROM SELECTED TRANSCRIPTS ARE QUOTED TO ILLUSTRATE COURTROOM TECHNIQUE. ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS SECOND PART IS A DISCUSSION OF PSYCHIATRIC NOMENCLATURE AND MEDICO-LEGAL ASPECTS OF ORGANIC BRAIN DAMAGE. A BRIEF LIST OF REFERENCES IS INCLUDED. A COPY OF THE JUNE 1972 CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS EXCLUSIONARY CRITERIA FOR THE CIVIL ADDICT PROGRAM APPEARS IN THE APPENDIX.
