Abstract
The articles begins with a discussion of the increase in violent offenders in the overall prison population, the features of conflict theory and also the role of self-control in reducing violence, the author presents the specific programmatic approach to domestic violence reduction employed by the Hampden County Correctional Center in Ludlow, Massachusetts. The program is based upon the belief that the outcomes of violence reduction treatment are dependent the ability of the subjects to learn to maintain self-control. The 8 week voluntary program focuses on the development of self-control and learning skills designed to decrease the likelihood of conflict escalation. The program utilizes large group lecture, group discussion, films, handouts, and worksheets to lead participants to reach 12 program goals. Research supporting the efficacy of the program in reducing hostility and especially verbal hostility is referenced. 7 references
