THIS PAPER REPORTS THE RESULTS OF A FOLLOW-UP INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECTS OF IMPRISONMENT ON 154 LONG TERM INMATES AND A COMPARISON GROUP OF NON-INMATES.
Abstract
THE TESTS ADMINISTERED INCLUDED TESTS OF INTELLIGENCE AND ABILITIES, PERSONALITY AND ATTITUDES. ANALYSIS REVEALED NO EVIDENCE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL DETERIORATION. ON THE CONTRARY, VERBAL INTELLIGENCE SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND TESTING, AND THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS IN HOSTILITY, WHICH WERE ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASING EMOTIONAL MATURITY. THESE RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO PREVIOUS STUDIES. FOR PART III OF THIS REPORT, SEE NCJ-25019. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
