EXPLANATION OF THE PROCESS BY WHICH NEW POLICEMEN OFTEN BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO AND EVEN PART OF POLICE CORRUPTION UPON LEAVING THE POLICE ACADEMY.
Abstract
THE SOCIALIZATION PROCESS BEGINS AS THE BEAT POLICEMAN LEARNS TO EXPECT AND RECEIVE SMALL FAVORS FROM THE CITIZENS WHOM HE SERVES. THE NEXT STEP OF SOCIALIZATION INVOLVES REGULAR SMALL CASH GIFTS TO POLICE OFFICERS BY LOCAL STOREKEEPERS AND BUSINESSMEN. RELATIONSHIPS NOW BEGIN TO BECOME RECIPROCAL IN NATURE, WITH THE OFFICER OVERLOOKING CERTAIN ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES OF HIS 'FRIENDS.' FINALLY, MAJOR TEMPTATIONS IN THE FORM OF LARGE BRIBES OCCUR.
