This article critically reviews the research on practice effectiveness with abused women.
Abstract
The article examines outcomes of practice research with battered women in terms of its conceptual adequacy, methodology, and findings. Each of nine studies used in this review was examined in terms of type, length and underlying theoretical base of the intervention; number of subjects; study design; methodology; measurement tools; findings; and study limitations. Findings and implied shortcomings of the research included: (1) focus on short-term, group-intervention process; (2) very small study samples; (3) most often cited frameworks of practice used with battered women were feminist, social support, and cognitive; (4) design weakness - only one of the nine studies used a control or comparison group, and only one investigation reported on any follow up; and (5) inexperienced workers provided the bulk of the interventions that were evaluated.
