FINAL REPORT ON A PROJECT TO DEVELOP A MECHANISM FOR COORDINATING DRUG ABUSE PROGRAMS IN THE WASHINGTON (DC) AREA AND FOR DEVELOPING A PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAM AIMED AT NON-USERS, EXPERIMENTERS, AND ADDICTS.
Abstract
IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE PROJECT GOALS, THE METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS OPERATED IN FOUR MAJOR AREAS OF EMPHASIS: A CLEARINGHOUSE FUNCTION; A SENTENCING ALTERNATIVE FOR DRUG OFFENDERS; DISSEMINATION OF DRUG INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC; AND DEVELOPMENT OF A DRUG ABUSE CURRICULUM FOR THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. IN ITS CLEARINGHOUSE CAPACITY, THE PROJECT BECAME A FORUM FOR EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION, TECHNIQUES, AND EXPERTISE IN THE FIELD OF DRUG ABUSE FOR THE 70 MEMBER AGENCIES. AN ACADEMIC INTEREST IN SENTENCING ALTERNATIVES WAS SHOWN. PUBLIC EDUCATION AND SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED.
