This pamphlet summarizes major issues considered in a workshop on adult and juvenile community service programs within the California correctional system.
Abstract
Public service projects can benefit the offender, the victim, and the community. Public support, including citizen involvement and constituency building, is essential to the success of such programs. In addition, safety issues and those surrounding liability and labor codes must be addressed. The relationship between the service provider and the recipient is extremely important, as is the evaluation and monitoring of the worksite or project. In selecting offenders for participation, correctional staff should take into account criminal history, public safety, and vocational, physical, and emotional factors. Adequate security precautions can reduce the chance of problems and ensure the safety of the community and its residents. In addition to holding offenders accountable for their crimes, public service programs can help offenders improve work habits and work and coping skills. A workshop program and list of participants are appended.
