THE RESULTS OF AN EVALUATION OF TWO LEAA-FUNDED TRAINING PROGRAMS IN THE PUERTO RICO POLICE DEPARTMENT ARE SUMMARIZED.
Abstract
THE SUPERVISORS' TRAINING PROGRAM CONSISTED OF FOUR 3-DAY SEMINARS HELD AT THE POLICE ACADEMY. THE SEMINARS WERE DESIGNED TO HELP NEW AND EXPERIENCED SUPERVISORS LEARN TO DEAL WITH ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEMS. PRESENTED WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF PRIVATE ADMINISTRATIVE AND MANAGERIAL SPECIALISTS, THE SEMINARS COVERED COMMUNICATIONS, AUTHORITY, SUPERVISION, AND ADMINISTRATION THEORY AND DECISION PROCESSES. A TOTAL OF 130 POLICE OFFICERS PARTICIPATED. THE SPECIALIZED TRAINING PROGRAM INCLUDED SESSIONS ON A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT TOPICS (E.G., EXPLOSIVES, ORGANIZED CRIME, POLICE INTELLIGENCE, HOSTAGES AND CRISIS INTERVENTION) HELD AT SITES THROUGHOUT PUERTO RICO. SEVENTY-SEVEN OFFICERS PARTICIPATED IN THE SPECIALIZED SESSIONS. AS A RESULT OF THE PROGRAMS, THE PUERTO RICO POLICE DEPARTMENT NOW HAS THE CAPACITY TO TRAIN OFFICERS WITHOUT SENDING THEM TO THE MAINLAND. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONTINUING THE PROGRAMS ON A PERMANENT BASIS ARE OUTLINED. (LKM)
