FINAL REPORT ON A PROJECT WHICH WAS DESIGNED TO RECRUIT AND UTILIZE A PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST IN ORDER TO DEVELOP AND TEST PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING INSTRUMENTS TO IMPROVE POLICE RECRUIT SCREENING AND SELECTION.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT WERE TO RAISE THE MINIMUM STANDARD AND PROCEDURES OF RECRUITMENT IN THE PUERTO RICO POLICE, TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL CONSULTATION SERVICES TO EXISTING PERSONNEL, AND TO PROVIDE A MECHANISM FOR THE DISCOVERY AND DISMISSAL OF UNSUITABLE PERSONNEL. IN ORDER TO FULFILL THESE OBJECTIVES, THIS PROJECT SOUGHT TO DEVELOP APPROPRIATE PSYCHOLOGICAL INSTRUMENTS, TO TEST AND EVALUATE THESE INSTRUMENTS, AND TO IMPLEMENT A PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING PROGRAM. A WEIGHTED APPLICATION BLANK WAS DEVELOPED BY COMPARING SEVERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL POLICE OFFICERS. THIS FORM WAS BEING TESTED AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT. DATA WAS ALSO BEING GATHERED FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE. ALSO, A STUDY OF A SHORT QUESTIONNAIRE DERIVED FROM THE MINNESOTA MULTIPHASIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY WAS ALMOST COMPLETED AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT. IT IS NOTED THAT COMPLETION OF THESE TESTS WAS DELAYED BY THE LACK OF COMPUTER PROCESSING FACILITIES. THESE FACILITIES WERE OBTAINED, AND IT IS REPORTED THAT AS A RESULT THE INSTRUMENTS WOULD BE FINISHED IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
