This article examines the role of the systems integrator in acquiring, using, and maintaining electronic security systems.
Abstract
From card access systems to the latest video visitation technology, correctional facilities are increasingly dependent on the expertise of systems integration firms. The systems integrator is important to the success of any security project. The proficient integrator should be able to combine ingenuity with high-tech solutions to give the end user a durable, non-proprietary solution that can easily be upgraded and is user-friendly. Non-proprietary systems can be serviced by maintenance personnel, by local electronics service technicians, or by the company that sold the system. Proprietary systems require service from the company that sold or designed the system. The article describes some commercially available hardware and software that can integrate all security functions, including those related to visitation and arraignment. The article recommends against retrofitting of systems in older facilities, describing that procedure as "risky and time-consuming."
