Author(s)
B F Loeb Jr; J C Drennan
Date Published

This report lists the statutory punishments for certain North Carolina motor vehicle offenses.
Abstract
The chart presented is limited to three categories of motor vehicle offenses: offenses that occur frequently, serious offenses that must be heard by a district or superior court judge, and new offenses and offenses with unusually severe or lenient punishments. Besides possible fines, imprisonment, and license suspension or revocation, convictions for certain motor vehicle law offenses may result in the assessment of points under what is known as the "point system." Drivers who accumulate too many points may have their licenses suspended. For each general statute, the chart presents the statute number, the maximum punishment, the number of the punishment citation, and a description of the offense. This information is presented for each statute under the following statute categories: driver's license violations, commercial license violations, rules-of-the-road violations, vehicle registration violations, accident responsibility laws, insurance violations, equipment violations, and miscellaneous violations.
