Abstract
THE AUTHOR STATES THAT THERE ARE AT LEAST SIX SOCIAL ATTITUDES TO WARDS THE TREATMENT OF CRIME: EXPIATION, RESTITUTION, RETRIBUTION, DETERRENCE, REFORMATION, AND PREVENTION. THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS SOME OF THE PRACTICES AND POLICIES OF THE BRITISH STATE TOWARDS THE CRIMINAL WITH REGARD TO THESE ATTITUDES, USING THEM AS AN ANALYTICAL DEVICE WITH WHICH TO EXAMINE THE MEANING AND INTENTION OF MANY BRITISH CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACTS AND REPORTS.
