LECTURE TWO DEALS WITH ASPECTS OF PUNISHMENT THEORIES, THE ABOLITION OF CAPITAL AND CORPORAL PUNISHMENT, THE AMELIORATION OF PRISON CONDITIONS, AND THE REFORMATIVE NATURE OF PRISONS. THE THIRD LECTURE DISCUSSES REMISSION AND PAROLE, SENTENCE LENGTH, PROBATION AND PROBATION OFFICERS, AND THE TREATMENT OF CHILDREN, YOUNG PERSONS AND THE MENTALLY ABNORMAL OFFENDER. LECTURE FOUR REVIEWS THE PROBLEM OF RECIDIVISM, ASSESSES PROGRESS IN ENGLISH PENAL REFORM, AND SUGGESTS A NUMBER OF POSSIBLE REFORM MEASURES.
