RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF A METHOD OF ESTIMATING VIOLENT BEHAVIOR FROM INTERVIEWS.
Abstract
TWO BRITISH INSTITUTIONS WERE SELECTED FOR STUDY - A CENTER FOR LONG-TERM PRISONERS, AND BORSTAL INSTITUTION FOR BOYS. INDEPENDENT RATINGS OF VIOLENCE WERE MADE AT TWO SEPARATE INTERVIEWS. EACH GROUP WAS ASSESSED WITH RESPECT TO FREQUENCY AND DESTRUCTIVENESS OF VIOLENT BEHAVIOR. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT A MODERATE LEVEL OF RELIABILITY CAN BE OBTAINED BY INTERVIEW, OF A HISTORICAL PATTERN OF VIOLENCE IN BOTH ADULT AND YOUNG OFFENDERS IN PENAL INSTITUTIONS. THE RESULTS INDICATE LOW CORRELATIONS BETWEEN VIOLENCE RATINGS AND ACTUAL VIOLENT OFFENSES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
