Abstract

The goal of the Youth and Community Combined Action (YACCA) is to enhance the capacity of targeted communities to engage youth in planning and implementing social and economic activities that are meaningful to them, so as to reduce their levels of offending. YACCA will establish community activity projects in up to 16 areas throughout Queensland. These projects will involve consultation and participation from the local community in the planning, design, and implementation of community activities designed to reduce juvenile crime. Community activity projects may include supervised and self-employment opportunities, skill- development programs, and recreational activities. A second program component, Neighborhood Youth Projects, will provide direct service to youth disconnected from family, school, and community support. Services may include helping youth gain access to housing, health and labor market programs, income security, legal services, family counseling, education, transport, and recreation. Mainstream youth organizations have indicated an interest in participating in the program. The program's evaluation design is described.
