The purpose of this campaign workbook is to help communities and organizations plan, structure, and conduct their own "Race Against Drugs" events in an effort to prevent drug use by juveniles.
Abstract
The "Race Against Drugs" (RAD) is a national campaign to prevent drug use among juveniles by using their interest in motorcar sports and personalities to motivate them not to use drugs. The workbook is designed for race-sanctioning organizations, owners and promoters, race-event coordinators, racing teams, FBI Drug Demand Reduction Coordinators, local law enforcement, local government, schools, and communities. Each section of the workbook addresses some aspect of a RAD campaign. One section suggests ways to make contacts that are essential to an effective program. It recommends ways to secure involvement from the community, the government, and businesses. Guidelines for fundraising are also provided. The workbook section on RAD events divides the events into promotional events, half-day events, all-day events, and several-day events. Events that can be promoted at races, schools, and malls are also described. Forms to be used in connection with various events are included. Topics addressed in the section on "Promotion" include publicity, media use, spokespersons, and time tables. The appendix contains resource lists, materials suggestions, guidelines for ordering materials, and statistics. In addition to the workbook, other materials in the kit are a 5-minute program video, graphics that can be used to publicize RAD, and a pamphlet that provides an overview of the program.
