The six articles included in this special edition address various issues pertaining to race in both the adult and juvenile justice systems.
Abstract
The first article examines the need for more qualitative approaches toward understanding the context within which race differences occur. The author uses observations, interviews, and focus groups to document variations across minority groups in terms of juvenile encounters with police. The second article explores detention differences in juvenile processing between minority and white youth in Michigan. Another article outlines some of the problems inherent in previous research focusing on the adult criminal justice system. The following article, analyzing the processing of misdemeanant cases in New York, illustrate these methodological problems. The final two articles assess the impact of attitudes on race and punishment. Chapter references
