The Camden Victim Support Scheme (VSS) (England) has identified and acted to meet needs of victims of racial harassment largely unmet by other agencies.
Abstract
The Camden VSS found that racial and ethnic minorities in the community had experienced disturbing and frightening harassment that they perceived was not being adequately addressed by the police. Victims wanted an immediate response to the reporting of the incident and acknowledgement of its seriousness as well as reassurance that the incident would be adequately addressed. Victims of racial harassment also indicated they needed initial support for emotional distress, advice on a range of practical problems, referral to relevant agencies, and information about the processing of their cases. The Camden VSS extended its services to meet these needs. The Camden VSS also offers such specialist services as advice on criminal injuries compensation and advice, support, and transportation for victims involved in formal criminal proceedings. The national association of VSS should encourage all of its local organizations to become involved in services to victims of racial harassment.
