THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE GROWING PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE VIOLENT CRIME OF RAPE AND ITS EFFECT ON THE RAPE VICTIM, AND DESCRIBES THE LOS ANGELES SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT'S COMPREHENSIVE RAPE INVESTIGATION PROGRAM.
Abstract
THE RAPE VICTIM MUST OFTEN FACT ATTITUDINAL AND PROCEDURAL DIFFICULTIES WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE COMPREHENSIVE RAPE INVESTIGATION PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO REMEDY THESE DIFFICULTIES. SPECIALLY TRAINED FEMALE DEPUTIES INVESTIGATE ALL RAPE CASES. THE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR THESE OFFICERS IS DESCRIBED. THROUGH USE OF THESE FEMALE OFFICERS AND STANDARDIZATION OF MEDICAL EVIDENCE COLLECTION, THIS PROGRAM ATTEMPTS TO COMBAT THE NEGATIVE IMAGE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, PRODUCE MORE CONVICTIONS FOR RAPE OFFENSES, AND BENEFIT THE RAPE VICTIM.
