DATA COLLECTED FROM UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING STATISTICS SHOW THAT THERE WERE 536 RAPES AND ATTEMPTED RAPES IN ARKANSAS IN 1977.
Abstract
OF THESE, 397 WERE RAPES AND 139 WERE ATTEMPTED RAPES. VICTIMS WERE PREDOMINATELY WHITE (60 PERCENT) AND LESS THAN 25 YEARS OF AGE (69 PERCENT). A MAJORITY, 81.9 PERCENT, WERE INTRARACIAL RAPES (SAME RACE) AND 18 PERCENT INTERRACIAL. HALF OF THE RAPES AND ATTEMPTED RAPES WERE KNOWN TO BE REPORTED TO LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN LESS THAN ONE HOUR OF THE OFFENSE. MORE THAN FOUR OUT OF FIVE WERE COMMITTED BY A LONE OFFENDER AND A MAJORITY WERE COMMITTED BY PERSONS UNKNOWN TO THE VICTIM. MORE RAPES WERE COMMITTED IN AUGUST THAN IN ANY OTHER MONTH AND THE THIRD QUARTER OF THE YEAR ACCOUNTED FOR ALMOST ONE THIRD OF ALL RAPES. MORE RAPES WERE COMMITTED ON SATURDAY THAN ON ANY OTHER DAY OF THE WEEK AND THE MOST COMMON TIME FOR RAPES WAS BETWEEN THE HOURS OF MIDNIGHT AND 2 A.M. ORIGINAL CONTACT BETWEEN VICTIM AND OFFENDER OCCURRED IN THE VICTIM'S RESIDENCE IN ONE HALF OF THE CASES AND OFFENDERS USED VERBAL THREATS AND FISTS TO EXERT FORCE IN MORE THAN TWO OUT OF THREE OF THE RAPES. THE VICTIM'S RESIDENCE WAS THE SCENE OF THE RAPE IN ONE HALF OF THE CASES. OF 397 RAPE VICTIMS, 303 (76.3 PERCENT) WERE EXAMINED BY A PHYSICIAN; 58 SUSTAINED INJURIES; AND 34 REQUIRED TREATMENT.
