This article discusses the public awareness presentations, publications, and community involvement aspects of the Florida State University's rape prevention program.
Abstract
Since 1972, the Department of Public Safety at Florida State University (Tallahassee, Fla.,) has been involved in the development, implementation, and continued improvement of a rape awareness program for university women. Public awareness presentations are held in residence halls, sororities, scholarship houses, and academic classes, and before other organized campus and community groups. The presentations use a multimedia approach, including a film which gives an overview of rape as described by both victims and rapists in California; and a slide show wich examines particular problem areas and behaviors in the Florida State University community, offers suggestions for rape prevention and reviews the criminal justice system response to a rape victim. A prevention pamphlet, a card containing emergency telephone numbers, bookmarks, and posters also are part of the prevention program. Community involvement has helped to make the rape prevention program a successful one, with a continued low number of reported rapes on university property.
