This report presents information on the frequency and nature of offending of persons imprisoned for violent sexual offenses in New Zealand.
Abstract
The first section presents statistics on convictions and sentencing for sexual violation offenses; the information covers the age and gender of victims of offenses which resulted in a conviction. The second section examines offenders released from prison between 1979 and 1981 and between 1984 and 1986 after serving a sentence for rape. Because both groups of inmates were followed up for a minimum of five years after their release, recidivism statistics were compared. To provide a more recent picture of offenders convicted of violent sexual offenses, the final section of this report presents information collected as part of a 1991 prison census. While the focus is primarily on rapists, the statistics also cover offenders who were imprisoned for unlawful sexual connection and attempted sexual violation. 23 tables and 4 appendixes
