This report deals with statistics on rape in Alabama.
Abstract
The National Crime Survey (NCS) calculates that 2 in every 1,000 women are victimized by rape each year. Only 50 percent report the offense to the police. The statistics cited here come from reports by Alabama's law enforcement agencies to the State's Uniform Crime Report (UCR). There were 920 reported rapes in Alabama in 1983; of these, 1 out of 5 was an attempt. Four out of five rapes involved a single victim and a single offender. Alabama law enforcement arrested 437 males on the charge of forcible rape. Of those arrested, 42 percent were white and 58 percent were black. A total of 55 were juveniles. Juvenile arrest trends for rape show a slight increase for 1983 over the past 5 years. In over 50 percent of the rapes in Alabama in 1983, the victim and the offender knew each other. Sixteen percent of the victims sustained physical injuries as a result of the rape. In two-thirds of the incidents, hands and fists and/or verbal threats were part of the force used to control the victim. Forty percent of the rapes occurred in the victim's residence and 10 percent in the offender's residence. Almost three-quarters of the incidents occurred between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The appendix contains a copy of the Supplementary Rape Report. Five references, 16 tables, and 7 graphs are included.
