Abstract
THE FIRST CHAPTER CONTAINS A TECHNICAL DISCUSSION OF THE SAMPLE, SAMPLING CHARACTERISTICS, AND DATA ANALYSIS. THE SECOND CHAPTER EXAMINES WHAT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS 'THE POLICEMAN'S WORKING PERSONALITY'. THE REMAINING CHAPTERS REPORT RCMP PERCEPTIONS ABOUT HUMAN NATURE, LAWS AND THE NECESSITY OF POLICE; ATTITUDES ABOUT THE USE OF FORCE AND POLICE AUTHORITY; RELATIONSHIPS WITH SUPERIORS; SOURCES OF SATISFACTION AND DISSATISFACTION WITH POLICE WORK; THE USEFULNESS OF IN-SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAMMES; AND SATISFACTION WITH VARIOUS ASPECTS OF LIFE AND LIFE AS A WHOLE. THE FINAL CHAPTER BRIEFLY SUMMARIZES THE MAJOR FINDINGS OF THIS REPORT. EACH TOPIC IS EXAMINED FOR VARIATIONS IN THE DATA BY THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS: DUTY CLASSIFICATION, RANK, DETACHMENT SIZE, YEARS IN RANK, DUTY, AND RCMP; PRE-RCMP CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS PREVIOUS POLICE EXPERIENCE, THE AGE AT WHICH RESPONDENTS FIRST DECIDED TO JOIN THE RCMP, AND THE AGE AT WHICH RESPONDENTS ACTUALLY JOINED THE RCMP; SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS AGE, MARITAL STATUS, NUMBER OF CHILDREN, FORMAL EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT, HOUSEHOLD INCOME, RESIDENCE, RELIGIOUS PREFERENCE AND SUBJECTIVE ETHNIC IDENTIFICATION; AND SATISFACTION WITH VARIOUS ASPECTS OF LIFE AND WITH LIFE AS A WHOLE.
