This article describes the Literacy Volunteers of Virginia Institutions Program (LVVI) at 22 institutions where inmates and community volunteer tutors provide one-to-one basic reading instructions to students supervised by teachers from the Department of Correctional Education (DCE).
Abstract
In 1987, an average 120 inmate tutors and 40 community volunteers provided 2,500 hours of instruction to 250 students each month. LVA grew out of the first of its kind Right to Read inmate tutorial program in Virginia established at Staunton Correctional Center in 1978. Efforts to expand the LVVI reading and rehabilitation program statewide, and community support for the program are discussed.
