TESTING OF INDIVIDUALS IN POST-RELEASE CARE IN THREE SWEDISH DISTRICTS SHOWED SERIOUS DEFICIENCIES IN READING AND WRITING ABILITY, AND CORRECTIVE MEAUSRES ARE RECOMMENDED.
Abstract
A DIAGNOATIC READING AND WRITING TEST AND A NONVERBAL TEST TO EVALUATE MENTAL CAPACITY WERE GIVEN TO POSTRELEASE CARE CLIENTS IN THE DISTRICTS OF VASTERAS, FALUN AND SUNDSVALL. THE TESTS SHOWED THAT IN VASTERAS A LITTLE MORE THAN 25 PERCENT HAD CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTIES WITH READING AND WRITING WHILE 10 PERCENT HAD A MENTAL CAPACITY ON THE SAME LOW LEVEL. IN FALUN THE RESPECTIVE FIGURES WERE 40 AND 15 PERCENT, WHILE IN SUNDSVALL THEY WERE 40 AND 6 PERCENT. IT IS FEARED THAT THOSE HANDICAPPED IN THIS WAY WILL FIND IT HARD TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN THEM AND AN INFORMATION-ORIENTED SOCIETY. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT SIMILAR STUDIES BE UNDERTAKEN IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS, AND THAT STEPS BE TAKEN TO MAKE REMEDIAL INSTRUCTION AVAILABLE TO THE INDIVIDUALS CONCERNED. TABLES AND DIAGRAMS ARE USED TO PRESENT BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE INDIVIDUALS IN THE THREE SAMPLES, THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS AND SOME STATISTICAL ANALYSIS PERFORMED IN ORDER TO INTERPRET THE RESULTS. --IN SWEDISH
