A DESCRIPTION OF A REMEDIAL EDUCATION AND PREVOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM WHICH HAS EMPLOYED PROGRAMMED LEARNING TECHNIQUES, AND REDUCED RECIDIVISM RATES OF PARTICIPATING INMATES TO TWENTY-TWO PERCENT.
Abstract
THE DIAGNOSTIC AND PRESCRIPTION PHASES OF THE PROGRAM ARE FIRST DESCRIBED. SEVERAL ACHIEVEMENT AND APTITUDE TESTS ARE ADMINISTERED TO ALL THE STUDENTS. FROM THESE SCORES, AN INDIVIDUALIZED PRESCRIPTIVE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR EACH STUDENT. PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTION AND A LEARNING LAB ALLOW EACH INDIVIDUAL TO WORK AT HIS OWN RATE. VOLUNTEER TUTORS FROM THE COMMUNITY AND COUNSELING ARE ALSO UTILIZED IN THE PROGRAM. EACH PACE STUDENT PARTICIPATES IN A PREVOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM AS WELL. THE STUDENTS ARE NOT TRAINED DIRECTLY IN DETAILED SKILLS BUT RATHER IN VOCABULARY, WORK ATTITUDES, ACQUIRING CONFIDENCE, MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT, BASIC TECHNICAL THEORY AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS. A JOB DEVELOPMENT AND PLACEMENT SERVICE AND FOLLOW-UP SERVICES AFTER INSTITUTIONAL RELEASE ARE PROVIDED AS A PART OF THE PACE PROGRAM.
