INTENDED AS A COLLEGE LEVEL TEXT FOR STUDENTS OF SOCIAL WORK OR CRIMINAL JUSTICE, THIS VOLUME INTRODUCES A VARIETY OF THEORETICAL COUNSELING MODELS AND APPLIES THEM TO CORRECTIONAL CASEWORK SITUATIONS.
Abstract
THE FOCUS OF THIS WORK IS COUNSELING FOR BEHAVIORAL CHANGE WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE COMMUNITY. A TOTAL OF 33 ARTICLES ARE INCLUDED. THEORIES OF PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT WHICH EXPLAIN CRIMINALITY AND DELINQUENCY ARE FIRST PRESENTED. SEVERAL ARTICLES ARE THEN PROVIDED WHICH SHOW HOW THESE THEORIES ARE APPLIED TO CORRECTIONS; REVIEW THE CURRENT TRENDS IN EXAMINING THE CAUSE AND TREATMENT OF ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR; AND DISCUSS SOME PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH CASEWORK IS CONDUCTED. THE STYLE AND ATTITUDE OF THE CASEWORKER AND THE DYNAMICS OF THE WORKER-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. THE FOURTH PART OF THIS TEXT INTRODUCES THE OFFENDER CLASSIFICATION AND TREATMENT MODELS THAT PRIMARILY SERVE IN ONE-TO-ONE COUNSELING AND FACILITATE THE APPLICATION OF INDIVIDUALIZED STRATEGIES AND PROGRAMS. FINALLY, SEVERAL GROUP COUNSELING MODELS ARE EXAMINED, AND SOME OF THE DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING ARE NOTED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
